Cut Flower Bouquet
(loose bunches or boxed flowers)
- Cut stems under water approximately ½ to 1 inch,
using a sharp
knife at a 45 degree angle. Do not use
scissors. Cutting allows for better water absorption
up the stem.
- Remove all leaves that will be below the water line.
- Immediately place flowers into a clean vase filled
with room-temperature water. If flowers are left out
of water for too long,
air locks in the stems can
occur. This blocks water from going up
the stem and
the flowers wilt quickly.
- Add the floral preservative packet to the water
according to packet instructions.
- Add clean fresh water to the vase as needed, usually
every
2 to 3 days. Re-cut flowers.
- Keep flowers away from direct sun, heat and drafts.
- Remove individual flowers as they begin to wilt.
If your bouquet includes roses:
- If a rose begins to droop prematurely, remove it
from the vase.
Fill the sink with warm water. Cut
about 1 inch off the stem and immerse the rose
completely in the water for about 2 hours.
Return the
rose to the vase.
